Dr. Carlos Garatea Grau
Carlos Garatea Grau served as rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru from 2019 until July 8, 2024. He is a full professor in the Department of Humanities. He holds a Ph.D. in Romance Philology from the University of Munich (Germany) and a master’s degree in Hispanic Linguistics from El Colegio de México. He has been a fellow of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and the Organization of American States (OAS).
He served as director of the Academic Planning and Evaluation Office at PUCP; he also served as chair of the Department of Humanities and dean of the General Studies in the Humanities program at PUCP.
Dr. Garatea is currently president of the Interuniversity Center for Development (CINDA, based in Santiago, Chile); vice president of the La Rábida Group of Ibero-American Universities (based in Seville, Spain); president of the Peruvian Network of Universities (RPU); president of the General Assembly of Rectors of the universities in the Consortium of Universities (Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University, University of Lima, University of the Pacific, and Pontifical Catholic University of Peru); member of the Peruvian Academy of Language and corresponding member of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE); He serves on the Board of Directors of the Association for the History of the Spanish Language and on several editorial boards of foreign academic journals; he served as secretary general of the Association of Linguistics and Philology of Latin America (ALFAL) for eight years.
He has taught short courses and given talks and presentations at universities in Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Italy, and Mexico. He has published approximately 100 academic articles in Peruvian and international journals. He has also written opinion pieces for the newspapers EL Comercio and La República.
