Rev. Father Vargas, third president at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, was born on October 22, 1886 in Lima and he was ordained priest of the Society of Jesus in 1921.

He joined this university as professor in 1931, after some time teaching at secondary level in Spain, Bolivia and Peru.  In 1935, Rev. Father Vargas, historian, became dean of the School of Arts, and was elected president after the death of Rev. Father Dintilhac in 1947. He remained in this position until 1953.

As a historian, his works include the monumental General History of Peru, written by him up to Volume X, as well as several works on the history of religion in Peru and the colonial time. Certainly, he is considered one of the most important Peruvian historians. He was also director of the National Library of Peru during the second government of Manuel Prado. In 1955, San Marcos University published a booklet of thirty pages exclusively devoted to list his publications. That production continued increasing until his death, in 1975.

Priest, professor, president at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, the memory of Rev. Father Rubén Vargas Ugarte S.J. shall endure in this university.
