Engineer Luis Guzmán Barrón
He was born in Huánuco in 1939. He holds a degree in civil engineering from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and a Master of Science degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States of America. He has worked as a design and construction engineer at the International Petroleum Company. He taught at our university from 1962 to 2009 and rose to the rank of full professorin theCivil Engineering Section of the Department of Engineering.
He has held various highly significant administrative positions at our university: member of theFaculty of Science and Engineering Council, head ofthe Academic Department of Engineering, university director of Academic Services, academic director of Faculty Academic Affairs, dean of theFaculty of Science and Engineering, vice president for academic affairs, and president of the university (2004–2009). He has participated in various national and international forums and conferences on university education and is a member of several scientific and academic communities. He has received numerous honors: an honorary doctorate from the National University of the Peruvian Amazon, the title of honorary professor at the National University of San Cristóbal de Huamanga, an honorary doctorate from the National University of Trujillo, and the title of honorary professor at the Catholic University of Trujillo.
It is worth highlighting Engineer Guzmán Barrón’s deep commitment to the future of the PUCP and his significant contribution to the institution’s academic life, first and foremost through his prolific teaching in the field of civil engineering. Later, while serving as rector, Engineer Guzmán Barrón resolutely promoted the university’s overall growth, as evidenced by the development and approval ofthe 2007–2010 Institutional Strategic Planand the creation of key units, such as the Office of the Vice Rector for Research, the Academic Office of Institutional Relations, the Academic Department of Psychology, the Office of Continuing Education, and the Institute of Radioastronomy, as well as the inauguration of the Confucius Institute-PUCP and the R.P. Felipe Mac Gregor, S.J. Complex. Furthermore, Mr. Guzmán Barrón worked with exemplary dedication to promote excellence in all aspects of university life through the international accreditation of engineering programs, expanding the availability ofonline educationandstudent exchange programs, establishing visiting professor chairs, fostering academic research, and developing the University’s IT platform, among other goals achieved.
In short, throughout his many years of service, Engineer Guzmán Barrón has worked toward the comprehensive, sustainable, and ongoing modernization of the University, with deep faith and confidence in the institution’s future.
