Father Felipe Mac Gregor, S.J., who served as rector for 14 years that were decisive for the development of the PUCP, and who is now rector emeritus, is one of the most active figures in our country’s recent history. A priest, teacher, and concerned citizen, his constant interest in fostering a culture of peace can be seen as a fundamental contribution to Peru’s intellectual life and to the wealth of ideas he promoted during his tenure as rector.

Father Mac Gregor began teaching at PUCP in 1948, instructing courses in ethics and logic; he held bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and theology, and later earned a doctorate in philosophy, in addition to having been ordained in 1944.

It would be nearly impossible to summarize Father MacGregor’s work as president; suffice it to say that he oversaw the major institutional renewal plan that moved the University from its small premises in downtown Lima to its current campus, as well as training and professional development programs for faculty members in various fields, through the signing of agreements that brought professors to our campus.

The PUCP’s current appearance owes a great deal to Father Mac Gregor, both in terms of the physical structure and the spirit of the institution, which were renewed and modernized during those 14 years. For this reason, after he stepped down from his position, the University Assembly named him Rector Emeritus.

In the years that followed, Father MacGregor demonstrated his commitment to both the University and Peru: he served as president of the 1984 Statutory Assembly, as well as president of the Peruvian Association for Peace Studies and Research since 1983. He has also received Peruvian and international honors, such as the Order of the Sun and the UNESCO Medal for Human Rights.

Father Felipe Mac Gregor, S.J., passed away on October 3, 2004, at the age of 90.
