Engineer Luis Guzmán Barrón

Born in Huánuco in 1939, Eng. Guzmán Barron is a civil engineer from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú with a master’s degree in Science from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. He worked in design and construction engineering at the International Petroleum Company; as professor in our University from 1962 to 2009, and became full professor in Civil Engineering at the Academic Department of Engineering.

He has occupied several and very important positions at PUCP: member of the Board of Trustees of the School of Science and Engineering, Head of the Academic Department of Engineering, Director of Academic Services, Academic Director of the Office of Faculty Academic Regime, Dean of the School of Science and Engineering, Academic vice-president and president of the university (2004 – 2009). Eng. Guzmán Barrón has participated in several national and international forums and congresses on university education, and he is member of many scientific and academic communities. Among his awards, he holds an honorary degree at Universidad Nacional de la Amazonía Peruana; he was awarded the title of honorary professor at Universidad Nacional San Cristóbal de Huamanga, honorary doctor at Universidad Nacional de Trujillo and honorary professor at Universidad Católica de Trujillo.

It is worth highlighting the deep commitment of Eng. Guzmán Barrón with the future of PUCP and his significant contribution to the institutional academic life, first, through his prolific teaching in the field of Civil Engineering, later, as president of this university. Eng. Guzmán Barrón decisively promoted general institutional growth, which accounts for the preparation and approval of the Institutional Strategic Plan 2007-2010  and the creation of important units, such as the Research vice-president’s Office, the Academic Office of Institutional Affairs, the Academic Department of Psychology, the Continuing Education Office and the Institute of Radio Astronomy, as well as the inauguration of the Confucius Institute Peru – PUCP and the building Rev. Father Felipe Mac Gregor, S.J. Likewise, Eng. Guzmán Barrón tried with exemplary fervor to promote excellence in all aspects of university activity, through the international accreditation of engineering careers, the increasing offer of online education and student exchange programs, the organisation of visiting professor lectures, the promotion of academic research and the development of PUCP’s IT platform, among other goals.

In summary, during his many years of service, Eng. Guzmán Barrón has sought comprehensive, sustainable and permanent modernization of this university, with a deep faith and confidence in the future of our institution.
