Profesor principal del Departamento de Economía. José Carlos estudia qué son, cómo cambian y por qué importan las instituciones para la economía y el ambiente. Su investigación ha sido publicada en más de una docena de revistas especializadas, como New Political Economy, Journal of Institutional Economics y World Development. Co-autor de Resource Booms and Institutional Pathways: The Case of the Extractive Industry in Peru (Palgrave 2017) y The Developmental Challenges of Mining and Oil: Lessons from Africa and Latin America (Palgrave 2012).
