Protozoarios del género Leishmania, son el agente causante de las diversas leishmaniasis que afectan varios países de América. Plantas sugeridas por la literatura etnobotánica como leishmanicidas serán colectadas y extraídas. Se estudiará las propiedades parasiticidas de dichos extractos en cultivos de leishmania.

We search for plant -derived beta-carboline and bis-benzyltetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids, as potential inhibitors of the pathogen-specific, trypanothione reductase (TR). Analogous molecules have been reported in the literature as trypanocides and /or leishmanicides, and our preliminary experimental results indicate that they inhibit TR modestly, validating Horvath's recent database search which pinpoints these skeletons as virutal TR ligands. Alkaloids of these heterocyclic characteristics will be isolated from plants -ethnobotanically and chemotaxonomically selected - and tested against rTR. Candidate molecules, inhibitors of rTR,will be tested on axenic cultured T.cruzi (epimastigotes and metacyclic trypomastigotes) and leishmania parasites.
