Proyecto Constitución de un Archivo Oral Andino

The purpose of this proposal is to create an oral archive in the Institute of Ethnomusicology at the Catholic University of Peru. This Institute has unique facilities and an audiovisual archive with 24-hour climate control which can house a new collection based on recordings of oral traditions. Moreover, the Institute already holds the largest audiovisual collections of Andean ethnographic materials, and can offer staff support and an institutional foundation. In order to pursue this endeavour, a small team of researchers would be gathered to search, locate and proceed to preserve audio collections of oral traditions from the Andes. This team would contact Peruvian scholars throughout the country that maintain private archives of recordings of oral traditions.

Proyecto Restauración de Colecciones Sonoras

This project aims at restoring and making accessible three of our earliest collections of Peruvian field recordings obtained around the late 1950s and early 1960s. These collections were obtained by three leading scholars of musical research: the renowned Peruvian writer José María Arguedas, and the musicologists Josafat Roel Pineda and Rosa Alarco. Regrettably, the three of them have passed away, but each of their collections remain as the finest records of the cultural heritage of the Americas.

Teaching cultural preservation of the traditional arts as a tool for development and community participation.

The purpose of this project is to strengthen local development, community ties and self-esteem in specific communities of the Ancash region of the Peruvian Andes, by raising the consciousness of the value of their traditional knowledge in the arts as instruments for the struggle against poverty and discrimination within a pluri-ethnic and multi-cultural nation (Perú). In order to reach this goal the project will teach local organizations (artists associations, municipalities and schools) the techniques of how to collect, preserve and spread their local traditional arts (mainly festivals, music and dance), through: (1) The organization of seminars and workshops; (2) The use and production of audiovisual educational materials; and (3) The dissemination of archiving, library and museological methods and techniques. The project will also promote and supervise the creation of community centers in which the materials collected will be preserved and exposed. These community centers will be used as learning tools for the younger generations, as vehicles for the strengthening of the community self-esteem, as places for the conservation of the local memories, and as an instrument for local development and growth of tourism, where convenient and/or necessary.
