Are digitally measured variations in cognitive readiness associated with kinematic parameters related to injury risk in football players?

Football requires intense motor actions in dynamic environments, under time pressure and high cognitive demands. Although neuromuscular and biomechanical factors have traditionally been investigated in studies of injury risk, recent evidence suggests that cognitive demands may influence the execution of critical movements. However, longitudinal studies examining whether acute fluctuations in a player's cognitive readiness are associated with changes in motor control remain scarce, particularly outside laboratory settings. This project will investigate the association between intraindividual fluctuations in cognitive readiness and kinematic parameters potentially related to injury risk in elite soccer players. Cognitive readiness will be assessed using a digital stimulus-response task measuring attention, inhibitory control, and response speed. After individual baselines have been established, players will complete sessions combining the cognitive test with standardized motor tasks, including bilateral landing, deceleration, and planned and reactive changes of direction. A subsample will be monitored during training games. Movements will be analyzed using markerless three-dimensional reconstruction, enabling the extraction of motor-control parameters such as knee flexion, dynamic knee valgus, trunk control, interlimb asymmetry, and post-landing stability. Statistical analyses will use models that account for the longitudinal structure of the data and repeated measurements within players. We hypothesize that days of lower cognitive readiness will be associated with less favorable kinematic patterns, with stronger effects during reactive changes of direction. These parameters will be treated as putative markers of movement patterns rather than as individual predictors of injury. The study is expected to advance the understanding of associations between cognitive state and motor control and to inform future monitoring strategies in high-performance sport.

Protocol (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/4K7BZ) - CAN SLEEP MONITORING HELP INFORM ABOUT FLUCTUATIONS IN BALL KICKING OUTPUTS? A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

The present protocol aims to set the methods for a systematic synthesis of literature studies that have evaluated the potential link among sleep and ball kicking movement across football codes. The following question will be addressed in the present systematic review: Among able-bodied male and female football code athletes, what is known regarding the direct evidence (studies statistically examining the association) and indirect evidence (studies collecting both without formally analysing their relationship) of sleep-related impact on ball kicking performance metrics? The hypotheses for the current review are non-directional (i.e., football kicking performance will be related/influenced by sleep in a considerable portion of included studies).

Artificial Intelligence in Lower Limb Kinematics: Reliability and Reproducibility in the Analysis of Runners with Chronic Ankle Instability

Kinematic motion analysis plays a fundamental role in understanding motor patterns, identifying injury risk factors, and optimizing sports performance. In the context of chronic ankle instability, kinematic assessment has traditionally relied on marker-based optoelectronic systems, which, despite their high accuracy, have limitations related to high costs, the need for controlled environments, and susceptibility to errors caused by soft tissue artifacts. In recent years, machine learning-based approaches, such as markerless posture detection, have been developed to overcome these constraints. However, the accuracy and reliability of these tools still require systematic validation. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility of different publicly available deep learning models for markerless posture detection by comparing them with a reference optoelectronic system. Forty young adult runners will be recruited to perform the Single-Leg Step Down functional test, with simultaneous data acquisition from digital cameras and an optoelectronic system. Statistical analysis will include the Bland-Altman test to assess agreement between methods, as well as the calculation of the coefficient of variation to measure inter-trial variability. The study¿s findings will provide evidence on the feasibility of using publicly available deep learning models for kinematic motion analysis, contributing to the validation of accessible and easily implementable tools in clinical and sports settings.

EFECTO DEL POSICIONAMIENTO DE LAS CÁMARAS DE VIDEO EN LOS DATOS CINEMÁTICOS DE LOCOMOCIÓN EN EL CONTEXTO DE FUTSAL (Dictamen aprobado N°159-2025-CEICVyT/PUCP)

IMPLEMENTACIÓN Y VALIDACIÓN DE ALGORITMOS DE INTELIGENCIA ARTIFICIAL PARA ANALIZAR LA ASIMETRÍA EN EL MOVIMIENTO DEL PATEO EN FUTSAL (dictamen aprobado #143-2025-CEICVyT/PUCP)

Protocol for a systematic review on brain-derived signals related to ball kicking movement in soccer (OSF Registries - code #nzasb - DOI:10.17605/OSF.IO/NZASB)

The present protocol aims to set the main methods for a systematic synthesis of literature studies that have evaluated brain signals related to ball kicking movement. The protocol for the present review follows the items suggested by The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. The electronic databases IEEE Xplore, Scopus, Web of Science, APA PsycNet¿, EBSCOHost, and PubMed will be searched (tentative date: June ¿ July/2025) in an attempt to identify evidence about brain-derived signals related to ball kicking movement in soccer, presented within scientific journal articles. The search strategy and key terms were defined according to previous systematic reviews that analyzed brain activity or ball kicking in the soccer context. The following information will be extracted from included studies: publication details ¿ authors, year of publication and funding; demographic characteristics ¿ geographical location of the study, number of participants, sex, age, playing level and positional role; task protocol ¿ location, instruction/aim, ball characteristics, limb(s) used; data outcomes ¿ cortical areas evaluated, data collection device and acquisition frequency; signal processing techniques and pertinent findings. To critically appraise the evidence collated, the STROBE checklist will be used to extract and provide a qualitative analysis (e.g. methods) for each of the of included studies. Finally, the best evidence synthesis method and gap maps will be constructed to provide a synthesis of the findings across studies.
