In this project, a different approach is followed: complementing the conventional macrocell network with small cells (micro-, pico- and femtocells) equipped with lower power nodes and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, thereby creating an Heterogeneous wireless Network (HetNet). Such approach is considered as the most promising way to increase the capacity and data rate of mobile wireless networks. Although an effective solution, HetNets still have a large number of technical challenges unsolved, the most important being the mitigation and coordination of the interferences between macro and small cells. RACHEL is expected to lead to significant progress beyond the current state-of-the-art in a number of radio access techniques for HetNets.

This project GRE3N (General radio concepts for energy cognizant mobile communications) aims at proposing a new approach and view of global energy-cognizant wireless communications systems where the different levels of the network comprising the component (hardware) level, the physical layer, the data link layer, the medium access control, and the system levels are designed in an energy efficient way and exploiting the interactions among such levels.

The primary objective of COSIMA is the development of novel communication methods at the physical layer level for the interference management in wireless communication networks. An heterogeneous multiterminal hardware demonstrator will be constructed for the practical evaluation of the most promising developed techniques.

COMONSENS is one of the 12 projects selected in 2008 by CONSOLIDER-INGENIO 2010 Program sponsored by the "Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación" of the Spanish Government. COMONSENS is a five-year project that integrates 67 researchers from 10 different research institutions in Spain and is coordinated by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). The objectives of the project include development of theoretical tools, algorithmic design, and testbed evaluation, combining disciplines such as Information Theory, Signal Processing and Network Theory with the aim of advancing the state of the art in communication and sensor networks.
