Aunque la moderna minería clama una mejoría en las condiciones ambientales, los conflictos sociales basados en estos reclamos locales han aumentado en los últimos años. La percepción de riesgos y externalidades resultan fundamentales para entender los conflictos sociales con poblaciones vulnerables y marginales, expuestas a proyectos mineros. A través del estudio de información etnográfica en los Andes peruanos, se analizarán conceptos de riesgo, vulnerabilidad y cultura, así como alternativas frente a problemas de sistemas de monitoreo ambiental y prevención de conflictos en la región andina peruana. La investigación busca lecciones de gobernabilidad, para negociaciones entre proyectos mineros, población local y autoridades gubernamentales, abordando asimismo posibles alternativas para prevenir enfrentamientos entre estos actores sociales, basado en colaboraciones interdisciplinarias, especialmente entre las ciencias naturales y ciencias sociales. De esta forma, se contribuye con propuestas de investigación aplicada de riesgo ambiental, dirigida a mejorar mecanismos de políticas públicas, particularmente en escenarios locales y andinos.

Climate change is becoming a major impediment to the ability of Latin American countries to achieve a more equal economic prosperity, reduce poverty and engage in sustainable development initiatives to reach the millennium goals. Many experts are calling on Latin American governments to start building long-term adaptation and mitigation programs. This project seeks to build centers of information on climate change (CICC) in three Andean countries (Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia). CICCs will be composed by two main programs. First, a program on climate change scenarios (SPCC) that can help farmers and other vulnerable social groups to enhance their local knowledge systems of risk management. Second, a sustainable governance program (SGP) that can facilitate the processes of adaptation and mitigation of rural Andean societies to climate change. CICCs will begin by identifying, documenting and studying atmospheric, hydrological, ecological and sociological issues that are emerging due to climatic events. The project team will work in partnership with local research experts from the three countries to design and establish the CICCs.

This project proposes to synthesize available information on the state and dynamics of the ecosystems of the Great Plains from the historic past through to the present. Many data exist both in published academic scholarship and in publicly available local records regarding the recent ecological history of the Great Plains; this project will bring together many of these data sources to produce a cohesive picture of the changes that have occurred in the ecosystem, especially focused on the changes in energy stocks and fluxes in the region (e.g. productivity shifts as land becomes farmed). This project will explicitly include humans into its conceptualization and thus analysis of the ecosystem, considering humans as one of many ecologically active entities (albeit a unique one) in the system. The goal of this project will be to eventually overlay these ecosystem changes with the patterns of human settlement and decision-making in this region though the last century and a half (the social research is through a separate NSF-funded research program, led by Roberta Balstad through the Center for Research on Environmental Decisions). Ideally these two histories of the region (social and ecological) will then be united and assessed under a variety of conceptual models, including the rubric of resilience, vulnerability, and adaptability of social-ecological systems as a complex adaptive systems.
