Radiometric techniques as a useful tool in the identification of areas of interest for hydrocarbon exploration were validated by a particular processing of the surface gamma-spectrometric and radon-in-soil data. The results were compared with those obtained by geological, geophysical and geochemical methods. The radiometric method was applied in prospects or leads to demonstrate its effectiveness in the localization and delimitation of reservoirs. Geological faults associated with petroleum systems were identified and localized. It was demonstrated that surface radiometric studies contributes to the decrease of costs and uncertainty in geophysical prospecting, furthermore, the environmental impact is minimized by focusing the seismic exploration. Possible conduits and sources responsible for emissions of natural gases in the soil and/or its penetration into aquifers were identified and localized. We evaluated the possibility to identify and locate zones of hydrocarbon accumulations by means of a new interpretation of the spectral gamma logs. Case Studies: 1. Radiometric Survey in Tascabaña town, Anzoategui state, Venezuela 2. Radiometric and geochemical study along a transect in the Amarilis oil field, Monagas state, Venezuela 3. Radiometric Survey in an area of the oilfield Nodosaria 15, Jusepin, Monagas State, Venezuela

The main objective of this project aims to determine the chemical characterization by INAA of the Valencioid and Ocumaroid pottery figurines recovered from three different geographical areas: The Los Roques Archipelago, The Central Coast and The Lake Valencia Basin. The element concentration analysis will allow not only to confirm the continental origin but also to determine the specific areas of production (workshop sourcing) of the stylistically diversified pre-Hispanic pottery figurines excavated on the Los Roques Archipelago, located off the central coast of Venezuela. By performing PGAA to these three groups of figurines we aim to add the new dimension to the connections that have been made during the interpretative process of the social reality and meaning of the Los Roques figurines and to evaluate the hypotheses that explain the origin of their stylistic diferentiation (Mackowiak de Antczak 2000). It is expected that rich nonchemical figurine data (stylistic and contextual) will provide interpretive perspective to the patterns observed in the chemical data, helping to build bridges between the potentially relevant data sets. Results of this research will contribute to our understanding of the nature of the relationships existed within the Valencioid polity and, especially between the core area (Lake Valencia Basin) and the periphery (the coast and the oceanic islands). Will also shed light into the significance of the figurines that are the ¿hallmark¿ of the Valencioid material culture. The overarching objective of this project is to introduce PGAA and related techniques to the Venezuelan archaeology and promote the interdisciplinary research of the archaeological materials and the integration of its results into wider perspectives of the re-construction of the socio-cultural past.

An alternative method to count and differentiate nuclear tracks in SSNTD was developed. The method is based on the analysis of Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of coherent light produced by tracks of an etched SSNT detector. The diffraction pattern was also simulated by applying computational Fourier Optics. The comparison between results obtained by simulation and by the theoretical model gave satisfactory concordance. The proposed method is capable of differentiating tracks in CR-39 by their diameter and energies. The discriminating ability to distinguish genuine etched tracks from defects and background anomalies was demonstrated. The influence of the incidence angles and track overlapping was considered.

The natural and artificial radioactivity in those components of the different media, linked to human activity, was measured. Possible sources of radioactivity were located and possible areas of environmental degradation were identified. A map of radioactivity levels of the Central Coast of Venezuela was made. Experimental data was provided, which will enable controlling and planning the urban, industrial and tourist development of the region under study.
