Historical Review

The Pontifical Catholic University of Peru was founded in 1917 with two schools – Arts and Law. The first president of the university was Reverend Father Jorge Dintilhac SS.CC. The university was officially recognized by the Government in Supreme Resolution on March 24, 1917.

It received its autonomy by way of Law N° 11003 (April 17, 1949) and Law N° 13417 (April 8, 1960), being declared a national university. This autonomy has been preserved by later laws.

On its silver anniversary, the Catholic University received from the Holy See the honorary title of Pontifical, by Decree of the Sacred Congregation of Seminaries and Universities dated September 30, 1942.
